Seeing as Spanish animators (as all other animators) like to pride themselves on their Festivals, I would say it a bit of both, there are quite a few of animated festivals in Spain that have a lot of upcoming as well as known big names attending said Festivals, so most of their work can not really be used for commercial projects such as advert otherwise they wouldn't be able to enter the Festivals, so a lot of the work that I have seen was quite experimental or intentionally made for Festivals. So to sum that up, I think that most of the bigger Spanish animation are intentionally made for Festival viewings and other bigger venues. Smaller studios may use their work for commercial purposes, but from what I've seen all of those were never really from big companies and fairly unheard of.
One of my favourite studios that I've come across was 'Headless productions'
You wouldn't be able to call their work experimental, but I wouldn't call it commercial either. Their animations are just to a very hight standard so it could be used for commercial purposes, but is in itself more independent than anything else.
I think they have a very unique style, it's refreshing and fairly versatile, so every piece of their work is different in itself, they also don't really have a preferred medium and 'experiment' quite a few different techniques. There is something very charming and genuine about their work which is why I really enjoy looking through their portfolio. I've come across them a little before this task so I had a bit more time to truly appreciate their character designs. I'll post a picture and the link to one of my favourite clips of theirs. It's absolutely lovely. The character and background design work really well together and I just really enjoy the simplicity of it, nothing too flashy or fancy, yet it still has quite the impact on its audience.
